Boy Scout Discover Scuba Program

Welcome to Blue Water Scuba of Logan's
Boy Scout Discover Scuba Program

You have come to the right place.  For over 20 years Lowell Huber has been running the scuba program for two scouting councils: The Great Salt Lake Council, and Trapper Trail Council.  Lowell knows what the Boy Scouts need when it comes to scuba, and Lowell has the equipment, program, and experience to deliver what the Boy Scouts want.

Let's introduce you to our program that literally thousands of scouts have participated in:

1.  First, you will get your liability and medical release forms signed by the parents.  It is very important that, for legal reasons, the parents/guardian write the whole word "YES" or "NO" and not just "Y" or "N" in answer to the medical questions.  Any "Yes" answer to a medical question must have doctor's medical release.  The paperwork will be the first thing we do when the scouts arrive.  You can download the forms here.   REMEMBER: ALL MEDICAL QUESTIONS MUST BE ANSWERED "YES" OR "NO".  Any yes answers will require a doctor's release.  If the medical condition is no longer a part of your life (broke your leg five years ago, no longer suffer from allergies, no longer have asma), then please answer "NO".

2. Second, everyone doing the discover scuba will watch the 30 minute PADI Discover Scuba video.  This video introduces very important concepts, information, and skills that every diver must know.  Our program is built upon repetition of skills.  After the video, there will be a short quiz on the most important information and skills.

3.  Third, you will then leave the classroom and go to the restroom.  The most important rule in scuba is "Never Hold Your Breath, and Always Breath."  But the second most important rule, especially for Boy Scouts is "THOU SHALL NOT PEE IN LOWELL'S WETSUIT."

4.  Fourth, you will be given a wetsuit and booties.  You will go to the water to put on your wetsuit and booties.  The water makes putting on your wetsuit much much easier.

5. Fifth, you need to be weighted down with a weight-belt because now you float like a cork in your wetsuit.

6.  Now that you sink, and have done your bouyancy check, you will get another quick lecture of skills you will need to pass off before a scuba instructor.

7.  You will be put into your scuba unit (that's your tank, BCD, and regs).  At the same time you will be given your fins and mask if you have not already been fitted in the previous step.

8.  When everyone has all their gear on, the group is led to the water in single file to the water.  A staff member will help you into the water.  In the water you will put on your fins.  We will have told and shown you the easiest way to put on your fins.

9.  Everyone will gather in a circle, and usually Lowell, or another instructor will start with your fins and go up to your mask  explaining, demonstrating, and evaluating every discover diver's skills with each piece of scuba equipment: How to properly kick with fins, drop your weightbelt, add and release air from the BCD, recover a regulator three different ways, clear a regulator of water two different ways, clear a flooded mask, use an alternate airsource, read your depth and air gauges, equalize your ears, and have a safe/fun time.

10.  Each diver will be paired up with a buddy and start their dive.  We start in the shallows and when feeling comfortable, move to deeper water.  Scouts have enough air to dive for 30 to 45 minutes.  The buddy teams will explore everywhere while having fun while getting use to the scuba gear and skills.  At all times a scuba instructor is only seconds away from any scout should assistance be needed. This is why our dive area is clearly marked and the scouts will stay in that area.

After a wonderful dive, the scouts will exit the water, have their scuba unit removed with the help of Lowell and staff.  Scouts will then take off and hang up their own wetsuits. We appreciate the help and this keeps the wetsuit tops and bottoms from getting mixed up.  Boy scouts are also expected to rinse off any dirt on the wetsuit before hanging up.

There is scuba merit badge patch and the Scout Master will collect the signed patch cards from the instructor.
Pictures can be downloaded from our website.  The whole discover experience takes about 3 to 4 hours.
